November 6, 1967: In addition to being an All-Star player and head coach of the Boston Celtics, Bill Russell tried his hand at acting. In 1967, Russell guest-starred in Chuck Connors’ series “Cowboy in Africa” by playing a ranch hand named Jasiri. The producers and Russell were open to other appearances, but the show was canceled after one season. Connors, who played 53 games with the Celtics in the 1940s as well as nine seasons of professional baseball, had since become a film and TV star. In reference to acting in a play in 1985, Russell said, “I’d like to be good. I hope I will be. But I don’t think Laurence Olivier is going to stay up nights worrying about the competition.”

Rifleman toy rifle by Hubley. I had two of these back in the 1950s. The problem was, the stocks broke off easily.

The Hubley rifle also did not have the proper style ring lever.

My favorite rifle was this one that came out on the market around 1959.

This rifle had the proper lever style. And, since it was all plastic, it held up pretty good.

There were also mini rifles for playsets.

The following are pieces from my own personal collection. Most of them I bought at auctions.

Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain in the 1960s western TV series, The Rifleman. In many of the show's episodes, he was seen wearing his leather gloves.

Toy rifle released in the late 1950s by Marx. It is still wired to it's original display box. It was never used.

My real rifle. This gun is chambered in .44 Magnum caliber. It's actually a copy of the rifle used by John Wayne in most of his movies beginning with Stagecoach in 1939 through True Grit.
